That didn’t take long.
Just three days after anti-gun Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed California’s shiny new Glock and Glock-style ban into law, a consortium of Second Amendment groups mounted a powerful legal challenge.
The National Rifle Association (NRA), the Firearms Policy Coalition, the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), and their partners filed the federal lawsuit on Monday.
California officials banned something already illegal and then went further
Jaymes v. Bonta aims at the latest gun control scheme rammed through by California’s powerful gun rights opponents. Effective July 1, 2026, the controversial statute prohibits the sale or transfer of Glock and Glock-style pistols.
Specifically, models featuring a cruciform trigger bar are banned because some criminals use “Glock switches” to convert the handguns to fully automatic capability.
An act that is already illegal under federal law. Licensed firearm dealers “shall not sell, offer for sale, exchange, give, transfer, or deliver any semi-automatic machinegun-convertible pistol.”

Glock handguns are wildly popular among the sporting public, with millions of familiar models in circulation. For the state to issue a blanket ban on a standard weapon over criminal acts committed by the few is hardly aligned with the Constitution, as the complaint declared.
“That is flagrantly unconstitutional,” the filing stated. “These handguns are in common use; indeed, they are among the most popular firearms in the nation.”
If the law is not successfully challenged, law-abiding California residents “will have no practical way to acquire them.”
According to the NRA’s statement, “The U.S. Supreme Court has held that ‘common’ arms cannot be banned, and moreover, that handguns cannot be banned. California’s ban on many of the most popular handguns in America blatantly defies the Court’s precedent.”
John Commerford is the Executive Director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action.
“Our message to Gov. Newsom is simple: we will see you in court,” Commerford asserted. “Once again, they are attempting to violate landmark Supreme Court decisions and disarm law-abiding citizens by banning some of the most commonly owned handguns in America. This flagrant violation of rights cannot, and will not, go unchecked.”
FPC President Brandon Combs blasted California’s gun control regime. “The Constitution does not allow elitist politicians to decide which constitutionally protected guns the people may own, and California doesn’t get to tell people that their rights end where Gov. Newsom’s tyrannical, anti-Second Amendment politics begin. Every American has a right to choose the tools they trust to defend their lives and liberty.”
The FPC is already busy with the Renna v. Bonta lawsuit, which is aimed at dismantling California’s “handgun roster” ban.
SAF Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb further accused state officials of hostility to the Supreme Court’s precedents. “Lawmakers in the state obviously don’t understand that the Second Amendment is not a second-class right. We look forward to defeating this law in court and restoring the rights of California citizens.”
The SAF slammed anti-gunners for piling more gun control onto an already controversial regime. In an X post, the Second Amendment advocacy organization noted the ridiculousness of the pending law.
“Proponents of the bill claim the ban is about preventing ‘Glock switches’ from being attached to handguns,” the group posted. “But that is already illegal. In fact, possession of such a switch is itself a serious crime, even without it being attached to a gun. Moreover, the impetus of this bill was a shooting committed by someone who was already prohibited from owning guns at all due to prior violent felonies, and who had been released from prison several years early.”
Upsetting, but hardly surprising for California.
