Half of Canada’s Provinces Reject Ottawa’s Gun ‘Buyback’ Scheme

Canada’s controversial gun confiscation scheme, obviously misrepresented as a “buyback,” is dying a slow and painful death as fully half the nation is in open rebellion.

It’s bad enough that feds smear popular sporting rifles as “assault weapons” that must be eradicated. Officials added insult to injury by acting as though the forced confiscation is simply a benign act to ensure public safety. It is not.

Newfoundland and Labrador joined the wall of opposition, siding with Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta in telling federal authorities to kick rocks.

Lawmakers away from urban centers know that firearms are part of the social fabric

Progressive Conservative Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Tony Wakeham rejected calls for law-abiding citizens to hand over their firearms—even if “compensated.”

“For Newfoundland and Labrador, hunting is part of our life,” the premier explained. “To be able to live off the land is part of our life. And I don’t want to see that impeded in any way.”

Latest deadline to surrender weapons is quickly approaching

Saskatchewan authorities accused Ottawa of banning hunting rifles and collectors’ items in its mad dash to appease anti-gunners. The federal government earmarked $700 million for the scheme, taxpayer funding that critics charge would be better applied to law enforcement and other practical public safety measures.

Alan Gottlieb is the Chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA). He noted that the provincial resistance is “long overdue” and that the program is hardly a “buyback” as the government never owned the firearms to begin with.

Canadian gun owners have until the end of March to notify officials of their intent to hand over their weapons. The ever-changing compliance deadline is October 30—or whenever officials decide to try yet again to save face in light of public rejection.
