A Utah family was startled on Thursday during what was likely a typical evening by something no one should ever face. A stranger allegedly burst into the home, causing everyone to retreat and lock themselves in a bedroom—except one.
Police investigators believe the son confronted the intruder, later identified as 41-year-old Lance Hunter of Aurora, Colorado, as he attempted to get into the locked room. The intruder allegedly pushed the young man out of the way, but that was only the beginning.
The son grabbed a loaded weapon and fired, striking the suspect and causing him to flee for his life.
Wounded suspect fled to a nearby airport and allegedly stole a truck there
Authorities reported that Hunter bolted to a nearby aircraft hangar and stole a truck. As he attempted to escape, responding officers cornered him and tried to take him into custody.
Police officials noted that, even when shot and confronted by law enforcement, Hunter put up a fight.
“The suspect would not comply with deputies’ commands and had to be wrestled to the ground and handcuffed,” the booking affidavit said. “The suspect was taken to Utah Valley [Hospital] and treated for his gunshot wound before he was transported and booked into Utah County Jail.”

Obviously, the gunshot injury was not serious. The son was treated for minor wounds after the frightening incident.
Hunter faces an impressive list of both felony and misdemeanor charges, including burglary of a dwelling, theft of a firearm, criminal mischief, vehicle burglary, and assault. Investigators are currently checking if he is tied to other break-ins in the area.
As for the Utah family, they are undoubtedly grateful that there was a ready firearm in the home and that the son was courageous enough to confront the alleged intruder and turn away the threat.
