Impersonal connections are all too common in the age of social media, and these meetups with total strangers carry an element of danger that should not be ignored.
A Texas social media creator met with another man at around 11 a.m. Tuesday morning to film online content. When the meeting took place, things did not go according to script for either of the men, who were described only as in their early 20s.
Seemingly innocent meeting turned violent while parked at red light
The men sat in one of the drivers’ Tesla, and that’s when the encounter took a nearly lethal turn. The two drove away from their meeting place and were stopped at a red light in Houston when the incident unfolded.
One of the two armed individuals, the passenger, apparently had another motive and produced a gun to rob the driver. The intended victim was also armed, and when the suspect’s firearm was drawn, he drew his and a struggle ensued.
The targeted man fired at least one shot, striking the suspect. The wounded individual attempted to run away but collapsed onto the ground before being taken to the hospital, where he was reportedly listed in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery.
Extra precautions are critical in the era of social media meetings
Security video showed the suspect in dark clothing running from the Tesla before he fell to the ground. The driver can be seen going to the wounded man right after the shooting.
Investigators recovered two handguns from the crime scene, and a bullet hole was visible on the passenger’s side window. No charges have been filed as of the last report, and the investigation continues.
There are multiple lessons an intelligent person may draw from this violent encounter, and the first is obviously to prepare for the unexpected. In the modern world, that scenario could pop up anywhere—especially during an anonymous meeting with a stranger known only on social media.
