Leave it to the Land of Lincoln to concoct a gun control scheme rooted solely in virtue signaling and political grandstanding that does nothing to enhance public safety.
Illinois officials are notorious for throwing every conceivable impediment between lawful gun owners and exercising their Second Amendment rights. But the latest proposal by Illinois’ anti-gunners is preposterous—even for them.
State Rep. Anne Stava (D) introduced HB 4414 to require all handgun ammunition to be serialized. That’s right, the same technology that has proven time and again to be unworkable.
Proponents want a statewide registry of ammunition transactions
The bill would take effect January 1, 2027. The Illinois State Police would be charged with creating and maintaining a “centralized registry of all reports of handgun ammunition transactions reported to the Illinois State Police in a manner prescribed by the Illinois State Police.”
The National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) immediately ripped the proposal.
“HB 4414 relies on the debunked concept of microstamping to mandate serialization of all ammunition manufactured, owned, sold, or even lent within the state,” NAGR posted on X. “People caught with ‘unserialized ammo’ face misdemeanors and seizure.”

The gun rights organization further noted that supporters claim that the move would enhance public safety by solving more crimes.
Of course, Second Amendment opponents pushed this failed technology before, as if it were the advent of DNA mapping. The reality is that it is a pipe dream for those who want state control of every facet of guns and ammunition.
Then, there’s the matter of a “registry.” With a national firearm registry specifically prohibited by federal law, the Illinois proposal is a blatant backdoor attempt to circumvent this restriction by maintaining state records of all ammunition transactions.
