No right-thinking person would suggest that the state levy a tax on freedom of speech or set up a collection box outside their house of worship.
But for many anti-gunners, erecting a paywall between law-abiding citizens and the right to keep and bear arms is a perfectly acceptable practice. Take the most recent example in Illinois.
Gun rights opponents would levy a new tax on the Second Amendment
The Land of Lincoln would eradicate gun rights altogether if possible, but because of the pesky Second Amendment, lawmakers must content themselves with picking around the edges.
House Bill 3320, the so-called “Responsibility in Firearm Legislation (RIFL) Act, would mandate that gun manufacturers and sellers pay a fee that would be earmarked for victims of “gun violence.”
Of course, it will be the consumer who ultimately pockets the tax, and that is just fine with gun rights opponents. And the bill does absolutely nothing to deter violent criminals, but perhaps that is the point.
Everyone knows consumers will ultimately bear the cost of the fees
Alan Gottlieb, Chairman of the Citizens Committee to Keep and Bear Arms (CCKRB), blasted the proposal for targeting those who have done nothing wrong.
“This bill requires firearms manufacturers, importers, and retailers to obtain a state license in order to sell their products to Illinois residents,” Gottlieb revealed. “It’s nothing more than a massive revenue generator to feed the state coffers at the expense of everyone in the firearm industry, starting with gun makers and ending with gun dealers, who will pass these costs on to consumers.”
The gun rights advocate further charged that law-abiding businesses and individuals are to be penalized for the criminal acts of those truly responsible for “gun violence.”
This is nothing more than political grandstanding and scapegoating, and HB 3320 should be soundly rejected. Unfortunately, this is Illinois and gun rights, so it will likely sail through the legislature and be signed by the governor.
