Anti-gunners increasingly embrace the mantra that “the end justifies the means.” It matters not if the process violates the law or even the U.S. Constitution, so long as law-abiding citizens lose their gun rights.
Now comes a shocking allegation that the City of Jacksonville is in violation of Florida law as it compiles an illegal gun registry.
Councilman Nick Howland (R) told local media that the city gathered personal data on gun owners who entered two municipal buildings carrying their weapons. City Hall and the Yates Building officials questioned the citizens on their free exercise of Second Amendment rights and kept their findings in notebooks.
“In those notebooks for two years, that info has been gathered,” Howland charged. “Florida is a no-registry state. So, that is a clear violation of the law.”
The councilman told Action News Jax that the lists were stashed in the two locations where they were gathered. “They were asked to document their first name, last name, contact information, and the type of firearm they were carrying,” Howland explained.
The Sunshine State outlawed such registries, which raise the specter of widespread confiscation, nearly two years ago.
The lawmaker is the city’s Rules Committee Chair. According to Florida Politics, Howland requested a meeting between city leaders to “discuss the illegal firearm registry that has allegedly been maintained for nearly two years.”
His allegations coincided with an ongoing investigation into Jacksonville’s practices by the State’s Attorney’s Office. Mayor Donna Deegan (D) revealed that the city received a subpoena from the office and asserted that her administration complied with its demands.
Florida lawmakers gave the anti-registry law sharp teeth to punish those who ignore the state mandate. Local governments may be fined as much as $5 million, and individuals compiling such registries may face a third-degree felony charge.
