The burglary of an unoccupied residence is bad enough, but if there’s any positive, it’s that the perpetrator chose a target where, at least theoretically, it is unoccupied.
Then there’s the “home invasion” phenomenon, where suspects rush into a home and hold the occupant/s at gunpoint. This is a truly disturbing scenario, and the act of commandeering residents at gunpoint is a significant escalation.
One Kentucky man apparently paid for that choice Friday morning with his life.
Investigators believe the homeowner acted in self-defense
According to the Harrodsburg Police Department, the violent encounter exploded at around 5 a.m. Police Chief Scott Elder told reporters on the scene that a 911 call came in referring to a shooting at the home.
Upon arrival, first responders found 36-year-old Daniel Hyatt suffering from what would be a fatal gunshot wound. Elder revealed that investigators believed the incident was isolated and posed no danger to the public.
Breaking into an occupied residence is placing one’s life in another’s hands
Shocked neighbors described the incident as unusual and reported that they did not hear the early morning encounter. And the good news from prosecutors is that the homeowner has not been charged at this time.
If the facts hold, charges are extremely unlikely in Kentucky for such an apparent case of self-defense. This is not California or Chicago, and there remains a healthy respect in the Bluegrass State for the right to keep and bear arms.
With an estimated 500 million firearms in U.S. circulation, it borders on insanity to break into an occupied residence. The chances of encountering an armed and ready citizen are simply too high in 2026, and such incidents are now regularly reported.
Oftentimes, they end very badly for the suspect.
There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.
