Just imagine being a young person at home at 4:30 a.m. and you hear the unmistakable sound of a break-in. What do you do?
In the case of a Clay County, Kentucky, teenager, their choice was made quickly and decisively, and it may well have saved lives.
It was the dark hours of early Saturday morning when investigators say the juvenile was forced into action. It is unclear if they were at home alone or if others were present, but the youngster acted to protect himself and possibly their family.
The Manchester Police Department believes two men broke into the home intending to steal firearms out of a safe. In retrospect, it was not the wisest move to invade a residence where it is known that the occupants are armed.
The unidentified young person quickly retrieved a firearm and shot at both men who allegedly entered the dwelling.
Jeffrey M. Allen, 51, of Manchester, was pronounced dead at the scene. Roger D. Smith, 44, of McKee, was transported by ambulance to an area hospital where doctors attempted to save his life.
He also succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation is ongoing, and no charges were immediately filed against the teenager. Prosecutors will decide whether to present the case to a grand jury.
Interestingly, two bills before the Kentucky legislature could apply to incidents like this.
SB 56 permits parents to be charged if their firearms are not locked “in an appropriate safe storage depository” or are made “incapable of being fired by use of a gun-locking device appropriate to the weapon.”
Another measure in the House allows parents to face charges if a firearm is “recklessly” left where an underage person may gain access.
Certainly food for thought considering the potentially lethal consequences faced if the young person did not have access to a firearm early Saturday morning.
