A Kentucky teenager suddenly found himself having to defend his mother from an alleged violent attack on Friday evening. The presence of a ready firearm and the young man’s courage may have saved his mother’s life.
The Owensboro Police Department (OPD) was called to a residence just after 7 p.m. in response to a shooting. They found a chaotic scene when they arrived.
Young man reportedly retrieved a firearm to protect his mother
According to reports, 30-year-old Christopher Ray suffered what became a fatal gunshot wound in the incident. First responders rendered aid, but the suspect was pronounced dead at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.
Investigators soon determined that Ray assaulted the young man’s mother in the home. The son retrieved a firearm and shot at least one round at the alleged attacker in what initially appears to be a clear-cut case of self-defense.
Authorities consulted with prosecutors before releasing the teenager into his undoubtedly grateful mother’s custody. A full review of the evidence in the fatal encounter is expected, though the outcome will likely remain the same.
Kentucky citizens are protected by the state’s ‘Stand Your Ground’ law
OPD investigators indicated that the deceased may have been a family member.
Kentucky enacted its “Stand Your Ground” law in 2006, which erased any duty for law-abiding citizens to retreat if they have a legal right to be where they are. If a person reasonably believes that they or someone else faces grave danger, they are allowed to resort to deadly force.
Anti-gun groups such as Giffords mock the notion of armed self-defense and instead endorse running and hiding. The group’s Director of Local Policy, Allison Anderman, blasted Stand Your Ground as unnecessary and dangerous.
“There has always been, for hundreds of years, the standard that you have to try to retreat from the conflict before using lethal force,” she claimed. “Stand Your Ground refers to repealing the duty to retreat in public, meaning that you can take someone else’s life even if you could have left the conflict without harm to yourself or anyone else.”
That’s all well and good—right up until a violent attack erupts. At that point, there’s just no substitute for armed self-defense.
There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.
Defend America is more than a name, it’s a stand for freedom, resilience, and the values this country was built on. Every tee, hat, and mug is a symbol of unapologetic pride. Wear it loud, wear it proud, and let the world know: freedom isn’t negotiable.
