LA Sheriff’s Department Rips DOJ For Pending Investigation into Gun Carry Permit Applications

Under California’s gun control regime, Second Amendment enthusiasts meet official resistance at every turn. State residents are forced to plead with the government for a concealed carry weapons (CCW) permit, and receiving one is far from certain.

Los Angeles County citizens must apply through the Sheriff’s Department, and the U.S. Department of Justice is inundated with complaints of applications being “slow walked” through that system.

In response, the DOJ this week announced it will investigate the sheriff’s department to determine if proper procedures are being followed. When confronted by a gun rights advocacy group over its actions, the LASD doubled down and claimed it operated within the law.

LASD claims it is correctly processing carry applications, but data says otherwise

Officials told The Reload that the county is, in fact, doing its job in processing applications.

“It is important to clarify that the LASD’s CCW Unit has been issuing permits at a significantly increased rate, contrary to the statistics and information cited by the Department of Justice in its complaint,” the department claimed in a statement. “We remain committed to addressing all applications fairly, promptly, and with a balanced approach. We are confident a fair and impartial review of our efforts will show that the Department has not engaged in any pattern or practice of depriving individuals of their Second Amendment rights.”

DOJ v. LASD: Someone’s not telling the truth

On the other hand, the DOJ provided numbers that directly contradict the LASD’s assertion.

Understand that federal prosecutors have sifted through LASD data for months and found substantial evidence to support critics’ charges. Some 8,000 applications were evaluated, specifically the 3,982 submitted between January 2024 and March 2025.

Two residents received their CCW during that time period. That clearly indicates a broken system that the DOJ needs to look into.
