After another tragic event in a “gun-free” school zone, one lawmaker called for a legal change that will help protect students and teachers from the next lunatic.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) wants to repeal the Gun-Free School Zones Act (1990) to better defend campuses from violent criminals. The federal law prohibits firearms in “school zones” in a failed attempt to protect these institutions.
Instead, soft targets are created.
It is inarguable that evil-minded individuals seek unarmed victims
If Massie and other like-minded lawmakers are successful, well-trained teachers and staff could step up when the unthinkable occurs. This is a program that is gaining popularity in scattered school districts, though existing federal law complicates the extensive arming of faculty or staff.
It is not speculation to assert that soft targets attract violent criminals. The deceased shooter who recently opened fire at a Minneapolis Catholic school and killed two declared in his manifesto that he sought an attack zone where potential victims would be “unarmed.”
And thanks to current federal law, that wish was granted in the most horrific manner.
A change in federal law could greatly enhance school safety
Massie wants to change that, and supporters strongly believe the “Safe Students Act” will accomplish that goal.
“Gun-free zones are ineffective and make our schools less safe,” Massie charged. “Since 1950, 94 percent of mass public shootings have occurred in places where citizens are banned from having guns. Banks, churches, sports stadiums, and many of my colleagues in Congress are protected with firearms. Yet children inside the classroom are too frequently left vulnerable.”
A prominent Second Amendment rights organization quickly stepped up and endorsed Massie’s idea.
Gun Owner of America posted on X that lawmakers need to act quickly and protect the nation’s children. “Congress needs to abandon the failed federal gun-free schools policy & arm willing teachers instead!”
