Gun owners must be aware that there are times when even the most justified self-defense shooting sparks unjustified and troubling reactions.

A terrifying self-defense incident unfolded at Kentucky State University (KSU) last month, after which a grand jury determined that an armed man who fired into a raging mob was justified. That should have been the end of it, but it clearly was not.

Investigators believe Jacob Bard shot and killed 19-year-old De’Jon Fox, who attacked his son as his family was trying to move the young man off campus. The son previously reported a burglary to authorities and was the subject of a physically violent intimidation campaign by large groups.

Another person was shot and survived.

Now the parents, 37-year-old Chardnae Cleveland and 38-year-old De’Jon Darrell Fox, face felony intimidation charges in Vanderburgh County.

According to the probable cause affidavit obtained by WDRB, Fox allegedly posted threats against Bard on multiple occasions.

Police reported one post that read, “I want his son dead just like mine.” Another said in part, “YOU DONTKNOW WHAT U TOOK FROM ME BUT YOU WILL FEEL THE SAME HURT I FEEL.” Still another was listed in the affidavit: “Might drive to Evansville today to see some vicelords.”

Authorities noted that the Vice Lords are well known to police for violent criminal activities.

Bard’s attorneys released a statement Monday declaring that their client was “completely justified” in using deadly force to protect his loved ones from attack. Some 20-30 people, many in hoods and ski masks and reportedly not KSU students, swarmed the family in the dormitory before the attack spilled over outside.

The violence erupted despite Bard requesting and receiving an escort from campus security. The mob ignored them.
