The period before sunrise is when many Americans start to stir and prepare for the new day. What it typically isn’t is a reason to be on high alert and ready for danger, certainly if a person is in their own home.
But that’s exactly what a Tennessee man reportedly faced early Monday morning just before 5 a.m.
Man fires on suspect after she allegedly entered his home
Memphis police officials were called to the scene of the apparent intrusion and found an injured woman when they arrived. She was down in front of the home with gunshot wounds to her upper leg, and investigators soon determined what happened.
The unidentified man recounted that he was asleep at that early hour, only to be startled awake by sounds coming from the back of his house. When he went to investigate, he found the suspect.
She apparently entered through an unlocked back door. Then it got truly bizarre.
Violent encounter quickly took a bizarre twist
When the homeowner confronted her, she told him that she was there to buy his home. A confrontation ensued and that’s when he allegedly shot her.
Memphis officials believe the woman suffered from mental health issues, and she was transported to the hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. After being treated, the suspect was taken into custody.
One immediate issue is the unlocked back door. There is no way to know if she could or would have used force to enter the residence had the door been locked, but it is careless and dangerous to leave entrances to your dwelling unsecured.
Then there’s the mental health aspect. While these issues seem more common every day and must be addressed, the time to take preventive action is not when the suspect is already inside.
