There are hundreds of millions of firearms in circulation in the U.S., and roughly half of all households have at least one gun. And while the overwhelming majority of owners practice safe storage and keep their firearms away from children, there are exceptions.
That is why it is critical that the youth are educated on how to react to an unsecured weapon. For one Michigan county, the right choice was a long-standing safety program provided by the National Rifle Association (NRA).
NRA program teaches children how to react to an unsecured firearm
The Eddie Eagle GunSafe program is now available for children in the Monroe County School District. The sheriff’s office along with other local law enforcement, the D.A.R.E. Board, and local superintendents enthusiastically support this nonpartisan effort.
Unlike other programs, the NRA is committed to avoiding politics. That does not stop critics from pouncing on the effort, but their criticisms are based solely on antipathy for the 2A community.
The message is simple and powerful for children who encounter an unsecured firearm. Stop! Don’t touch. Run away. Tell a grown-up.
Gun safety should be taught in every school
The Morgan County Sheriff’s Department announced the program’s launch on social media. It noted that many critical issues are regularly addressed by schools, including online safety and stranger danger.
Gun safety clearly should be included in these lessons, and it now is in Morgan County.
Much to the NRA’s credit, Eddie Eagle is not presented in a political manner. While avoiding contentious issues, the program is a nonpartisan outreach to protect some of society’s most vulnerable from making bad decisions.
Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to gun safety, and children must be taught how to appropriately respond to the act of a careless adult.
With that in mind, Eddie Eagle should be prominently featured in every American school to enhance public safety.
