North Carolina’s quest to become the 30th constitutional carry state is on hold for the moment as lawmakers rescheduled a critical vote.
This week’s scheduled veto override vote of Senate Bill 50, Freedom to Carry NC, was postponed to September 22. The bill would remove the requirement that law-abiding citizens seek government permission before exercising their Second Amendment rights.
There are misgivings about SB 50, though it is a step in the right direction
The NC Senate already voted to override Gov. Josh Stein’s (D) veto in July. The bill’s fate now rests on the House, which must approve the override by the mandatory three-fifths majority of lawmakers present.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) strongly supports SB 50, although the organization expressed concerns over specific aspects of the bill. As currently worded, the NRA believes there are scenarios that could entrap gun owners and prevent them from fully exercising self-defense rights.
Though imperfect, SB50 is still generally a step in the correct direction for gun rights.
2A supporters in the NC House need an assist to override Stein’s veto
The margin is so small for gun rights supporters to reach the three-fifths threshold that they are counting on an assist from the opposition. House Republicans in the Tar Heel State need one Democrat to break ranks to override a veto if they are united.
State Rep. Shelly Willingham (D) frustrated some of his party colleagues when he showed his willingness to reach across the aisle and work with supporters of other bills lined up for a veto vote. It is hoped that the Edgecombe County lawmaker will support expanding gun rights for his constituents.
North Carolina’s quest to become the 30th constitutional carry state is temporarily on hold, but with any luck, the state will improve its position as a bastion of Second Amendment rights.
There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.
Defend America is more than a name, it’s a stand for freedom, resilience, and the values this country was built on. Every tee, hat, and mug is a symbol of unapologetic pride. Wear it loud, wear it proud, and let the world know: freedom isn’t negotiable.
