When a burglar attempts to break into an occupied dwelling, they must somehow realize that they are risking their life. Whatever loot might be gained at the expense of another is apparently worth the risk for some.
For one suspect in North Carolina early Wednesday morning, that miscalculation could have been fatal.
Homeowner was armed and ready to face the violent intruder
A Charlotte couple was awakened in the dead of night by the unmistakable sounds of someone attempting to break into the home. The suspect allegedly forced the front door open and encountered immediate resistance.
Only a few seconds passed before the male occupant secured a weapon and opened fire. Whatever plans the suspect had in mind quickly evaporated when faced with an armed response.
The homeowner told investigators that he reacted to protect himself and his partner. “You don’t know how many people it is; you don’t know what their intentions are; you don’t know anything,” he recalled. “You just know somebody’s breaking in, so all you can do at that moment is protect yourself.”
Suspect quickly reconsidered when gunfire erupted
The unidentified defender did not know if he had hit the suspect, but they quickly retreated, and the couple hid in a bathroom until the police arrived.
While it must have been harrowing to wait for law enforcement, the residents were undoubtedly reassured to have a ready weapon.
The homeowner’s partner was certainly relieved that he had the foresight and courage to have a firearm ready and immediately respond to the sudden threat.
“He saved my life, saved my dog’s life,” she said. “I couldn’t ask for a better significant other in this situation.”
North Carolina’s Castle Doctrine allows homeowners to wield deadly force to defend life and property against an intruder. The Tar Heel State protects residents from legal liability, and there is no duty to retreat for the threatened party.
