Colorado’s traditions of being a sportsman’s paradise are being sorely tested as the state enacts yet more laws restricting gun rights. When it took effect this month, House Bill 24-1174 erected new barriers between law-abiding citizens and lawful gun ownership.
The contentious restrictions led to a surge in applications at sheriff’s offices across Colorado. The sporting public is preparing for the summer’s changes as the state increases the legislative burden on good people.
New firearm training regimen in effect in Colorado
Each individual must now undergo eight hours of training, which includes a live-fire component and a written exam. No online instruction is permitted.
The course focuses on firearm safety, safe storage, fundamentals of shooting, self-defense, and legal training. And when an individual seeks a permit renewal, they are required to take a two-hour refresher course that also includes live-fire and a test.
This will, in the words of anti-gunners, “save lives.”
Colorado lawmakers continue to usurp Second Amendment rights
Then there was Senate Bill 25-3, which earlier this year set the anti-gun rights tone for Colorado.
Gov. Jared Polis (D) tried to have it both ways in the April signing ceremony at the Capitol. He claimed to support Second Amendment freedoms while at that very moment stripping key components of the right to keep and bear arms from his state’s citizens.
“I really think this bill will make Colorado communities safer and prevent accidents, as well as gun violence,” Polis said. “Ultimately, that means saving lives while protecting our Second Amendment rights and upholding Colorado’s proud tradition of sports shooting and hunting.”
The contentious proposal, which passed on a strict party-line vote, established stringent new training requirements for Colorado residents who enjoy popular semi-automatic weapons.
These are mandatory for semi-automatic rifles, shotguns, and gas-operated semi-automatic handguns that accept detachable magazines. This permit-to-purchase scheme replaced the original proposal, which would have banned detachable magazines outright.
A person who does not want to undergo this training may purchase these types of weapons equipped with a permanently fixed magazine. The law takes effect in August 2026.
