First, it’s not like New York City has a gun shop on every corner. Sporting goods stores are in no danger of squeezing Starbucks and the ever-present bodega out of business.
But that did not stop Big Apple lawmakers last week from adding to the city’s growing pile of Second Amendment-related prohibitions.
The New York City Council passed an ordinance requiring these few establishments to post explicit warning signs telling their customers that firearms may be dangerous.

The shooting public and everyone else know this, but that did not stop lawmakers from pushing through their latest meaningless gun law. Councilmember Erik Bottcher (D) breathlessly told local media that such cautions are critical.
“I can’t think of a deadlier consumer product that has no warning for consumers at the point of purchase,” Bottcher claimed.
Lawmakers seek to stigmatize firearms in a similar way to cigarettes
Suppose the bill becomes law, and there is little doubt that it will. In that case, these words will be displayed in NYC’s few gun shops: “Warning: The presence of a firearm in the home is associated with an increased risk of suicide, death during domestic violence disputes, and unintentional deaths to children and others.”
Supporters go on to reveal that the City Health Department will create the signs. Even better, they will apparently mimic the Surgeon General’s warning labels on cigarettes.
There’s just a slight difference between cigarettes and Second Amendment-protected firearms. Used as intended, the overwhelming consensus is that tobacco products are harmful.
Firearms have numerous benefits, from traditionally providing food for the family to protecting loved ones and property from bad guys.
Then there’s the whole “tyrannical government” thing the Founding Fathers freed themselves from.
