Why should law-abiding Americans across the land care about the antics of California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D)? After all, he has political authority in exactly one state, leaving the other 49 firmly out of his control.

The plain truth is he has established himself as the primary political leader seeking to eradicate the Second Amendment. And not just for Californians.

Newsom infamously proposed a 28th Amendment that would export the Golden State’s failed gun policies from coast to coast. And even more ominously, he clearly has his sights on higher office.

Consider the state’s insidious SB 2, which is now up in the air. The governor created a spectacle when he introduced the measure by using “air quotes” when he mentioned the “right” to keep and bear firearms outside of the home.

Imagine using such gestures when referencing freedom of speech. Or religion. Or any other sacred right that the nation was founded on and fought to preserve and perfect.

It would be sacrilege.

The U.S. Supreme Court in 2022 clearly reconfirmed the constitutional right to bear arms for self-defense away from one’s home. But Newsom and his California cronies took it upon themselves to make a mockery of the ruling, and this produced S.B. 2.

It essentially declared every public property in the state a “sensitive place” and thus negated carry rights even for legal permit holders. In many areas it is virtually impossible to travel from one place to another without passing through such a site.

With the stroke of his pen, Newsom made criminals out of scores of upstanding residents.

A federal judge issued an injunction last month against the California overreach only to see an administrative stay allow the law to take effect on New Year’s Day. However, another appeals court last weekend dissolved the stay, granting a reprieve to state gun owners.

Now Newsom is counting on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to reverse the latest action, and it is likely he will get his wish. The court has been demonstrably hostile to gun rights in previous cases.

For many reasons, this case and this governor bear close watching by supporters of gun rights.
