Minnesota’s considerable gun-owning population can breathe easier after Gov. Tim Walz (D) raised the white flag in defeat over his push for a special legislative session.
The embattled governor wanted to summon lawmakers back into session to tackle his gun control agenda. Walz attempted to use the tragic Annunciation Church shooting in Minneapolis that claimed two lives in late August as a rallying cry.
The battle is won, but the war in Minnesota may be far from over
Fortunately for Second Amendment advocates, the drive for a special legislative session went nowhere.
Without an agreement at least in principle, Walz describes the potential session as “a waste of money and a waste of time.” A leading state gun rights organization quickly celebrated the retreat.
The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus simultaneously welcomed the news while cautioning that the fight is far from over.
2A group cautions that anti-gunners may still reach a deal
“Gov. Walz just blinked. After weeks of promising a gun control special session no matter what, he’s now backing off—because you turned up the heat,” the group posted on X. “It’s working. But it’s not over. Walz says he won’t call a special session unless there’s a deal. That means weak-kneed GOPers or DFLers-on-the-fence could still cave.”
Walz alone has the power in Minnesota to convene a special legislative session. He met with DFL and GOP leaders in recent weeks, attempting to work out a ban on so-called “assault weapons,” but no agreement was reached.
Gun rights supporters countered Walz’s campaign with calls for renewed efforts to tackle mental health issues along with school and public safety. But the Minnesota House is divided evenly between the parties, and the DFL controls the Senate by one mere vote.
No further meetings are scheduled, and the next planned session doesn’t open until February.
