A group of people apparently thought they had easy pickings in the early morning hours of Saturday when they targeted the home and vehicle of a North Georgia resident.
What they got was something very different.
The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) reported that the homeowner was alerted to the attempted break-ins at around 5:15 a.m. Suspects allegedly tried to enter the residence through the back door and into a vehicle.
A call was made to deputies, and the homeowner quickly became his own first responder.
The caller told arriving officers that he fired multiple shots at the suspects, one of whom was struck.
The WCSO described their investigation. “A round struck one of the female suspects, causing her to be transported by medical personnel. Tristan Knight has been arrested and charged with Felony Entering Auto in relation to this incident, and charges will be pending for the female.”
The wounded suspect was not immediately identified.
In yet more good news, Sheriff Darren J. Pierce announced in a statement that charges are not pending against the homeowner who defended life and property. The results of the investigation will be handed over to the District Attorney’s Office, though it is improbable that the man will receive anything more than a pat on the back for a job well done.
It is a risky proposition to attack the home of a good citizen at any time, and doubly so when that person is lawfully armed. Georgia is one of the majority of U.S. states in which the homeowner has broad latitude to defend life and property with lethal force, and that’s precisely what this Whitfield County man did.
It should be a very long time before the suspects attempt to recreate their alleged actions from Saturday morning.
