Canada’s gun owners have only days left before the March 31 deadline to declare prohibited firearms in their possession and ask the federal government for compensation as they hand over their heirlooms.
Under the highly controversial Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program, citizens who possess these popular semi-automatic weapons must surrender them to authorities. As for payment, those who miss the looming cutoff date will not receive taxpayer funds.
Canadian gun owners soundly reject this latest gun grab
The National Rifle Association (NRA) reported this week that gun grabbers spent a staggering CAD$779 million to collect a paltry stash of weapons. How paltry?
Daniel Fritter of the Canadian gun magazine Calibre estimated that somewhere from 1.6%-6% of firearms demanded by officials have been declared. The advocate cited government sources to document the cost to taxpayers at a whopping CAD$25,000 per banned weapon.
And it’s not just law-abiding citizens who reject the confiscation program.
Provincial governments push back at national confiscation program
Earlier this month, the Ottawa Police Service declared that it was “not in a position to take on the additional responsibilities without impacting core policing priorities.”
And Ottawa is hardly an outlier. A pair of western provinces, Alberta and Saskatchewan, told federal authorities in effect that they could go kick rocks.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Noe trumpeted a recent provincial law that would allow gun owners to circumvent the national confiscation program by applying for exemption certificates.
“We have taken a very significant, and I think firm, stand when it comes to standing up for law-abiding gun owners in this province and across the nation,” Moe told the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities.
The premier added that this is not the first time Canadian lawmakers “tried to institute some type of a gun grab.”
