NSSF Celebrates End of Controversial Export Restrictions

It is no secret that the previous administration did everything in its considerable power to tear down the Second Amendment. Part of this scheme included oppressive export restrictions on the firearms industry that resulted in an estimated $500 million in yearly losses.

That sorry state of affairs is no more. The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) rescinded the interim final rule with good news this week.

Anti-gunners hoped to strangle the firearm industry through export restrictions

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the firearm industry trade association, celebrated the posting of the Revisions of Firearms License Requirements Final Rule.

This welcome change eliminated export prohibitions that accomplished nothing but strangling a constitutionally protected manufacturing sector.

Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel, thanked current leadership for making progress possible.

US manufacturers were locked out of 36 national markets

“The firearm industry is tremendously grateful to the Trump administration and BIS officials for their actions to restore American competitiveness in firearm manufacturing and exports to foreign countries,” Keane declared. “American firearm manufacturing is the worldwide leader, and removing these restrictions will restore access to foreign markets while continuing to maintain adequate export controls to prevent illegal firearm trafficking.”

The previous restrictions banned U.S. manufacturers from exporting to 36 supposedly “high-risk” countries.

This week’s rollback restores the status previously enjoyed by the industry during the first Trump administration. There is still a worldwide export license requirement for most pistols, rifles, and non-long-barreled shotguns.

Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Jeffrey I. Kessler applauded the official rejection of war on the Second Amendment. “With today’s rule, BIS is restoring common sense to export controls and doing right by America’s proud firearms industry, while also continuing to protect national security.”

The licensing process was also streamlined to remove arbitrary barriers that made getting qualified more difficult.
