The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) is on the front lines protecting Second Amendment rights, and the industry trade group just released a warning concerning a powerful new economic frontier.
Cryptocurrency is here to stay, and with the recent passage of the GENIUS Act, it now has a stable framework within which to operate in the U.S. But while this is undoubtedly progress, a major crypto player slipped a harshly discriminatory regulation into its business practices.
Crypto giant refuses to allow its currency to be used for constitutionally protected activity
Circle Internet Group is the issuer of the popular U.S. Dollar Coin (USDC) currency. The company has an insidious clause in its terms of service that should alarm any gun enthusiast.
USDC users may not use their currency to buy “weapons of any kind, including but not limited to firearms, ammunition, knives, explosives, or related accessories.”
In a statement, NSSF officials condemned the blanket prohibition on Second Amendment-related transactions.
NSSF warns that the prohibition is not advancing the public interest
“This is not consumer protection; it’s ideological enforcement,” the NSSF charged. “This is the same sort of financial discrimination that NSSF has fought against and is finally seeing changes with the Trump administration. For America’s firearm owners and retailers, Circle’s rules about how their cryptocurrency can be used should sound alarm bells.”
That’s the truth, and every gun rights advocate is familiar with the pattern. A discriminatory move is shrouded under the cloak of “public safety” when it does absolutely zero to solve the real issue.
Circle responded to the NSSF statement with one of their own, a seemingly rushed and clumsy explanation:
“Circle has always held that to the right of lawful, the use of money should be free. This includes lawful purchases of firearms in the United States, which is a Second Amendment-protected right.”
Perhaps the crypto giant sees the light and will stop its discriminatory practices, but its policies should be challenged otherwise.
