New technology always attracts modern-day Luddites fearful that the sky is falling because advancements are not understood or in their control. For anti-gunners, the boogeyman is 3D printing capable of producing firearm components.
Now, New York state lawmakers want to make the mere possession of such files illegal.
Leaders want to control every 3D printer in New York state
In the governor’s latest budget proposal is a provision to create a Class E felony for residents who possess or share these capabilities. Under one provision, it would be a felony to transfer or share significant weapons parts files with someone who is not a fully licensed gunsmith.
The other would make a potential felony out of simply having one of these 3D files if you plan to create your own firearm or transfer them to a person who is not legally qualified to possess them.
Then there’s the censorware requirement.

Every 3D printer sold in New York state would be mandated to have installed software to detect any files containing instructions on how to create a firearm. If Gov. Kathy Hochul’s (D) office disapproves of your plans, your printer will refuse to carry out its instructions.
This would be the first law of its kind in the country, though similar proposals are in the pipeline in other states.
The legislation is unclear on how 3D printers already possessed by New York residents would be addressed. Critics charge that geometry is not a reliable detection system to sniff our firearm blueprints, and there will be many other applications caught in the state’s net.
Also, the weapons industry would be required to manufacture firearms that cannot be readily modified to function as an automatic. Of course, converting a gun in such a manner is already illegal, and criminals will not stop simply because the state added a new layer of punishment.
