Polls are part of modern political life, and a recent study revealed interesting data for gun rights advocates.
The latest Rasmussen effort encouragingly found that most American voters, 52%, favor enforcement of current laws over piling on more ineffective gun control. This shows growing awareness that coddling bad guys leads to more criminal violence.
Only 34% of respondents advocated new statutes. Good news, to be certain, but there’s a definite catch.
Wind’s direction does not decide which constitutional rights are important
Such findings, as positive as they are, may lay a dangerous trap for Second Amendment supporters. The right to keep and bear arms, just like the freedoms of speech, religion, the press, and peaceable assembly, is not subject to the ebb and flow of popular opinion.
Highly publicized events can sway the electorate in directions that they would not normally move, and tragedies and emergencies often spawn bad law. That is exactly why Founding Era civil libertarians insisted on enumerated rights rather than the “trust us” system.
Americans believe more gun control is not the solution
Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms Chairman Alan Gottlieb emphatically drove this point home.
“Constitutionally protected fundamental rights are not now, and never should be, subject to the results of public opinion polls,” Gottlieb declared. This is indeed a slippery slope that Second Amendment supporters should avoid.
Rasmussen also revealed that 48% of likely U.S. voters favor more stringent gun control. That’s down from 51% in October 2024, and 43% believe such laws are not the answer.
Again, the ebb and flow of the masses cannot dictate whether good people can or should possess firearms. Positive changes in gun rights at the federal level may be swiftly reversed with a single election.
That’s why the reaction to such polls is muted.
The Second Amendment isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, but the future is hardly guaranteed. If enough people oppose this basic freedom, they can elect leaders not only to legislate against lawful firearm ownership, but also to shift the U.S. Supreme Court into a hostile position.
