Push for Firearm Safety Instruction in Arizona Public Schools Advances

There was a time when sporting traditions such as hunting and target shooting were passed down through the generations. Parents and grandparents taught children and grandchildren the fine art of gun safety and the dos and don’ts of firearms.

And while that practice still holds in places, too many children in 2026 have little parental supervision—much less wise instruction on how to act when they encounter an unsecured firearm.

Arizona Senate Bill 1424 seeks to address this issue and recently cleared the House committees and caucuses.

Schools would provide much-needed firearm safety instruction to students

The proposal would mandate that school districts and charter schools implement age-appropriate yearly firearm safety instruction beginning in Fall 2027. Students from kindergarten through 12th grade would benefit from this opportunity.

The bill requires that training be limited to preventing accidents and responsible practices. The risks of mishandling a weapon are discussed along with safe storage and how to respond if the young person happens upon a firearm.

The scope of school firearm instruction would be limited

State Sen. Wendy Rogers (R) sponsored the legislation. “SB 1424, my bill, takes a very straightforward approach. They require schools to provide age-appropriate firearms safety instruction focused on accident prevention and personal safety.”

Rogers added that students would be taught not to touch the weapon, leave the area, and tell a trusted adult.

There would be no live or simulated ammunition and no live firearms. Instructors would not provide hands-on training in loading or shooting weapons in class.

Schools would be banned from asking students about firearms in their homes, and political discussions of gun issues are off-limits.

Educators would have several options for presenting the important information to young people. Materials would be made available electronically for parents to review if the school districts can deliver them.

There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.

Defend America is more than a name, it’s a stand for freedom, resilience, and the values this country was built on. Every tee, hat, and mug is a symbol of unapologetic pride. Wear it loud, wear it proud, and let the world know: freedom isn’t negotiable.
