Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) introduced an overdue piece of legislation on Thursday that, if passed and signed into law, would go a long way toward erasing the unworkable patchwork of state laws governing the legal carrying of firearms.
Fox News first reported that the National Constitutional Carry Act is under consideration in the upper chamber.
In a statement to the outlet, Lee declared that “the Founders established a national right to keep and bear arms, not to ask for permission from hostile local officials or risk imprisonment for crossing the wrong state line.”

Lee posted on X that if a person is “legally allowed to have a gun, you shouldn’t have to get any government’s permission to carry it any more than you should have to get permission to speak. My bill is necessary to protect Americans’ fundamental right to bear arms.”
After all, name another constitutionally guaranteed freedom that is wildly suppressed in some states and wholeheartedly endorsed in others.
No other enumerated constitutional right is subject to such arbitrary laws
And to answer critics who will certainly charge that states’ rights are being stripped, there will still be places where legal carry is banned. Private property rules obviously apply, as do some prohibitions in secure buildings.
Gun Owners of America (GOA) quickly threw its support behind the bill. Senior Vice President Erich Pratt cautioned that, especially now, the ability to engage in armed self-defense is critical.
“In a time of war, Americans cannot afford to have the right to bear arms delayed by arbitrary state permitting processes. Public safety is threatened not only by ordinary criminals, but also bad actors working for foreign adversaries, and Americans need to be armed for the security of our free state.”
