Second Amendment advocates are on the verge of a significant victory in New Mexico, according to a report by the Santa Fe New Mexican on the skirmish over a proposed ban on semi-automatic firearms.
The outlet noted that a debate in the House Judiciary Committee earlier this week ended in a stalemate, leaving little time to address issues with SB 17.
Gun rights opponents realize they may have gone too far in New Mexico
Anti-gunners attempted to tack on a slew of amendments, which essentially ensured that there would not be a vote. Even some supporters of the bill, such as the gun control outfit New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence, recognized that 2A opponents went too far with the overly broad measure.
The group’s Miranda Viscoli warned that the U.S. Supreme Court would almost certainly strike down the measure when it is inevitably challenged.
“By passing a ban this broad, we are handing the U.S. Supreme Court a perfect opportunity to deliver a definitive, nationwide ruling against state-level firearm restriction,” Viscoli said.
Though down, this latest gun control proposal is far from out
The effort to ban scores of popular modern sporting rifles, shotguns, and pistols stumbled this week, but 2A advocates cautioned that there is still time for a renewed push for the gun ban.
The National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) warned online to distrust accounts of the proposal’s demise.
“New Mexico media is reporting that SB 17 is dead, but it’s not buried yet,” the Second Amendment advocacy group posted. “NRA-ILA lobbyists like Nick Tuccio are working around the clock to ensure your rights are protected. Don’t let up. Contact your lawmakers and tell them to vote NO on gun control measures in Santa Fe.”
In addition to the sweeping prohibition on commonly held arms, SB 17 would also impose burdensome new regulations on New Mexico’s weapons dealers.
