Anti-Second Amendment forces in Washington state must be beaming with pride at the obvious cause-and-effect they set in motion—but at what cost?
According to a new report from SafeHome.org, the Evergreen State saw a drastic 45.7% decline in firearm sales from 2023 to 2024. Of course, this came on the heels of a wave of oppressive gun control measures, including the banning of so-called “assault rifles.”
Tens of millions of Americans own the popular sporting firearms and are often the front line of defense against criminals.
Washington gun sales dropped even as concealed carry permits increased
But for Washington residents, lawmakers decided the Second Amendment does not protect the right to keep and bear arms.
This came at a time when the state is experiencing record enthusiasm for firearms with an all-time high of more than 713,000 concealed pistol licenses (CPLs) in circulation. And even as more citizens are carrying for protection, the murder rate and overall violent crime have dropped.
And it must be noted that gun sales spiked in 2020 and for many months to follow. The recent slippage in transactions may reflect nothing more than a temporarily saturated market that is still relatively strong.
After years of record transactions, US gun sales continue to slip
The June report noted national trends as well.
Overall gun sales to date in the U.S. hit 16.1 million last year, a 3.4% drop from 2023. The first four months of 2025 saw U.S. gun stores and individuals sell approximately 5.2 million weapons.
This means the new year is on pace for a 4% overall decline in firearm sales.
The top five states for gun sales adjusted for population last year were Wyoming, Montana, Alaska, New Hampshire, and Oregon.
Interestingly, even with its own version of radical gun control, Massachusetts moved in the opposite direction from Washington and enjoyed the nation’s highest year-over-year increase at 22.5%.
