That thing that never happens happened again early Sunday morning, and this time it was a South Carolina resident who lived to tell the tale.
According to authorities, a teen suspect allegedly broke into a Spartanburg County home at around 2 a.m., and authorities quickly determined there was no connection between him and the residents. This apparently random attack, despite the early morning hour, did not catch the homeowner unprepared.
Quite the opposite.
Armed homeowner had to make split-second decision
Investigators believe the unidentified homeowner encountered 19-year-old Xavier Felix Rivera-Goucher of Campobello in the dwelling. Details are unclear as to exactly what transpired next, but the suspect was hit by multiple rounds reportedly fired by the resident.
Deputies rushed to the scene only to find Rivera-Goucher deceased. A forensic exam was scheduled for Monday, but based on initial evidence, the deadly incident was a classic case of a citizen defending themselves against an intruder.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Department said that no charges are pending against the shooter.
Three residents escaped alleged break-in uninjured
Besides the homeowner, two other residents were present when the alleged break-in exploded. They were not injured, likely thanks to the armed individual who stepped up and defended life and property.
These incidents, even as crime rates fall nationwide, are all too common. A violent criminal believes they chose an easy target, only to find that the intended victim flipped the script with a firearm and ruined their plans.
The loss of young life is always tragic, but these are volatile situations where life-and-death decisions must be made in a split second. There simply is no opportunity to gauge the threat level when a stranger invades your home.
Much to the dismay of anti-Second Amendment forces, this fatal encounter was more proof that tens of millions of Americans are armed and more than ready to turn the tables on those who would victimize them and their families.
