SC Shooting During Attempted Robbery Ruled Justifiable Self-Defense. According to South Carolina authorities, an attempted criminal act went tragically wrong Monday evening when two teenagers allegedly tried to rob an armed citizen.
One of the suspects had his life cut short, and the other faces serious felony charges. Media reports described the pair as “armed,” though it is unclear what weapons they possessed at the time of the attack.
Intended victim turned the tables on two alleged assailants with quick use of firearm
Investigators determined that Tre’sean White and Deonte Calden Trevon Lancit, both 18, approached an unidentified individual with the intent to rob him. That plan backfired quickly when the intended victim produced a loaded weapon and opened fire.
White was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. Lancit was taken into custody on charges of armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Hanahan Police Department officials spoke to witnesses and gathered evidence before deciding that no charges would be filed in the shooting. The Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s Office reviewed its findings and reached the same conclusion.
Palmetto State protects citizens’ rights to stand their ground
South Carolina is one of several states with strong “Stand Your Ground” laws protecting citizens from the duty to retreat when faced with a violent threat. The very nature of such attacks makes retreat impossible in many instances, and no innocent person should be legally forced to turn tail and run from criminals.
For all gun owners, it is imperative that they know the law wherever they are in the event of an unexpected confrontation in which deadly force is required. Being prepared and well-versed on local and state statutes goes hand-in-hand with a proper armed response to violence.
It may be the difference between life and death and avoiding harsh legal entanglements.
