The all-out sprint to enact as many gun restrictions as possible for Minnesota residents hit a speed bump this week.
The darling of anti-Second Amendment state lawmakers, HF 3434, is a monster that gun rights advocates warned about for months. The good news is, at least for now, the proposal is dead on arrival after stalling in a House committee on a 10-10 vote.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the firearm industry trade association, described the focal point of a package of laws that would further suppress gun rights.
“The centerpiece proposal is HF 3434, which would make it illegal to transfer, own, or possess a broad category of ‘semi-automatic military-style assault weapons’ and ‘large-capacity ammunition magazines,’” the NSSF explained in a release. “HF 3434 would create a ‘current owner’ certification scheme administered through the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and local law enforcement, requiring law-abiding owners wanting to keep their legally purchased firearms to seek certification, then bars transferring the firearms except by surrender for destruction.”

Simply put, the plan called for the eventual eradication of ownership of these popular weapons through attrition. No further purchases would be allowed.
Second Amendment advocates responded positively to the news that HF 3434 entered legislative purgatory.
The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus noted that the plan included a mandate that citizens “submit to warrantless police inspections” of their homes to prove to the government that they are worthy to exercise their constitutional rights.
Likewise, the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) celebrated the win. The group posted on X that the “unconstitutional attacks on the 2nd Amendment were shut down in committee, and we commit to continuing to shut down any attempt” by lawmakers to resurrect the bill.
