U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) last week reissued his call for a sweeping new gun control program that would include federal licensing for all gun owners. In the wake of the Maine mass shooting, the Democrat reintroduced a bill that never got off the ground in 2019.

The Federal Firearm Licensing Act would mandate all firearm purchasers and owners be subjected to licensing through Washington.

Booker made a ludicrous connection between driving a car and owning a firearm. “If you need a license to drive a car, you should need a license to own and use a gun.”

Someone needs to inform the esteemed senator that driving a car is not a constitutionally protected freedom.

And federal licensing is only one rung in Booker’s ladder to draconian gun control. The 14-part plan includes several aggressive gun control measures to suppress Second Amendment rights for law-abiding citizens.

The federal licensing program would mandate a comprehensive FBI background check for all along with proof of completion of gun safety training. Once approved, licensees would be granted permission from Washington for five years to purchase and own firearms.

This right, however, would come “with regular, automatic checks to flag non-compliance with license terms.” It would also have to be renewed in five years.

The dead-on-arrival proposal would prohibit so-called “assault weapons” and “high-capacity magazines” along with bump stocks. Universal background checks would be implemented for gun shows as well as online and even private sales.

These proposals were initially part of Booker’s platform for his failed 2020 campaign for president. Now he has rehashed the legislation for reasons unknown, but there is no chance it will clear Congress as the legislature is currently constructed.

At least it will score points with his base. That’s all that can be said about this doomed proposal.
