A 60-year-old Michigan man is thankful that he was armed Sunday evening despite there not being an apparent reason for enhanced self-defense.
That’s because while the Kalamazoo man returned from taking a ladder back to a neighbor, he was confronted by an apparently disturbed individual. The 49-year-old allegedly ordered the older man to leave the area and then attacked him with a snow shovel.
Striking an armed individual with a snow shovel is not a good idea
There’s no indication of what triggered the attack, but there’s no mistaking the result. After the younger man allegedly shoved his victim and struck him with the shovel, the 60-year-old reacted.
His response was to draw his legally owned pistol and fire two shots at his alleged attacker. One hit its mark, and the intended victim was still there waiting when emergency officials arrived.
Responding officers found the firearm and two spent 9mm casings along with the shovel allegedly used in the attack when they arrived. The suspect was transported to an area hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
There’s always the question of whether the person who defended themselves will be charged
The older man who had protected himself was treated for minor injuries sustained in the incident.
Investigators gathered security video footage from the area that apparently backed up the account the shooter gave. The unidentified intended victim was not arrested, and the evidence will be handed over to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office for a final decision.
Some might argue that firing a 9mm handgun is an overreaction to being struck by a garden tool. They are wrong.
Any honest person must acknowledge that a snow shovel is absolutely a deadly weapon in the right hands. There are many potentially lethal objects, and the right to self-defense extends to attacks with a wide array of instruments.
