Cases of armed self-defense are generally so clear cut that it is immediately obvious who was wrong and who was in the right. This describes the circumstances behind a weekend shooting in South Carolina that left one man dead but a woman and her two small children very much alive.

Authorities in Richland County report a woman heard loud banging at her door in the early Sunday morning hours. Obviously concerned as it was roughly 5 a.m., she approached the door only to get the shock of a man crashing through.

The intended victim now faced the suspect in her apartment, where she was the only one to protect her children.

The woman was able to retrieve a gun from her purse, at which point she asked the intruder to identify himself. But instead of doing the sensible thing, he allegedly continued to approach her.

She fired, and the intruder suffered a fatal wound.

The shaken mother called 911 and law enforcement officers rushed to the scene. She was taken in for questioning, but that did not last long. Officials declined to press charges for obvious reasons, and she was released.

Thankfully, neither the mother nor her two small children were injured in the frightening incident. All are unquestionably shaken, but they are fortunate that she was strong-willed and prepared to defend what is most precious.

It may never be known what motivated the intruder, but he took his life in his own hands when he apparently decided to target the woman. She was backed into a corner and left with no choice but to react as she did.

And as is normally the case, the circumstances of this incident appear open and shut. A law-abiding citizen faced a life-threatening danger and reacted in the most reasonable manner. Thanks to exercising her Second Amendment rights and God-given sense, she and her children are alive and well today.
