It’s a sorry state of affairs when duty calls for singling out a state for doing exactly what it should, but that’s where we are. Amid officials attempting to place blame on every possible entity except the guilty party, Mississippi decided to exit stage right.
The state is closing in on deploying SB 2710 at the start of July. Through a combination of enhanced penalties and cracking down on youthful violent offenders, lawmakers hope to send a message that age does not protect someone who willfully harms another.
Legislators prioritized protecting the innocent instead of coddling criminals
According to State Sen. Joey Fillingane (R), the pending law was created in response to law enforcement officials and community members expressing worries over surging youth violence.
“That was their priority for this legislative session…was to try to figure out a way to curb or try to restrict the amount of increase in youthful violence as it relates to the use of deadly weapons,” Fillingane explained. “The days of allowing young people—underage folks—to get away with very violent crimes using deadly weapons have ended.”
He added that authorities will target anyone, regardless of age, for such criminal activities.
Some accustomed to getting a free pass are in for a surprise beginning this summer
Starting July 1, Mississippi minors at least 15 years of age will be tried in adult courts instead of the youth system if they are accused of committing a crime with a stolen or deadly weapon.
If a lawbreaker is convicted of a crime and was in possession of a stolen firearm, an automatic 15-year consecutive sentence is added to what the court hands down. There are enhanced penalties for providing firearms to minors as well as shooting into a group of at least two people.
