Count a young Des Moines man as fortunate today after surviving a scary attempted robbery.
Innocent victim found himself disarmed—temporarily
The 22-year-old intended target was reportedly parked in his car when a group attempted to jump him in an apparent robbery attempt. One teenage suspect allegedly attacked the driver and was able to get his handgun away from him.
That is, one of his handguns.
The driver managed to retrieve a second weapon inside the car, and he exchanged gunshots with a 17-year-old suspect. The youth was hit multiple times, and he went down as his alleged accomplices quickly remembered something they had to elsewhere and fled.
Then the brave defender learned whether he faced a legal battle for using deadly force
The young suspect was treated at the scene by emergency personnel and then transported to a nearby hospital. He remained hospitalized at last report in critical condition.
Authorities detained the driver and recovered both weapons, and investigators studied the extensive physical evidence at the crime scene. The Polk County Attorney’s Office did not take long to determine that the intended victim was indeed the intended victim, and he was released.
The driver legally possessed his firearms and acted within his constitutional rights when he used his weapon to fight off what well could have been a fatal attack.
While some may feel safe and secure with one weapon available, the chaos of unexpected violence can leave a person disarmed with no other recourse. That backup firearm, whether it is secured in the car or secretly holstered, may be the difference between life and death.
