Texas Lawmakers Advance Bill to Prohibit Local Taxpayer-Funded Firearm ‘Buybacks’. Of all the silly schemes dreamed up by anti-gunners, “buybacks” are some of the most foolish.

Does anyone honestly believe that violent criminals will sell their weapons to the city government and repent from their evil ways? Not likely.

Instead, a few old pieces gathering dust will be collected at an enormous expense to taxpayers, and nothing significant will be accomplished. Texas lawmakers want to end these charades.

There is zero evidence that these programs affect crime rates

Texas legislator Wesley Virdell (R) introduced HB 3053 last week to prohibit cities and counties from supporting and operating these “buyback” drives. The House approved the measure 85-56, and now it moves on to the upper chamber.

Virdell explained that there is no evidence that these misguided programs accomplish anything but waste taxpayer dollars.

“Based on the studies and some of the people who’ve actually participated in these gun ‘buybacks,’ huge costs of money from the taxpayers, and it doesn’t actually have any statistical evidence that it reduces crime or suicides,” Virdell noted. “In some cases, crime actually increased in those areas afterwards.”

Buybacks are empty gestures that only waste taxpayer revenue

One critic, Rep. Gene Wu (D), claimed the move would interfere with local leaders “taking actions that they feel [are] necessary to protect their city.”

If studies showed that these programs actually reduced crime rates, Wu might have a point. But wasting taxpayer dollars on grandstanding and pandering to anti-Second Amendment forces is beneath the dignity of the Lone Star State.

And Virdell noted that law enforcement leaders report that the guns collected are generally not the type used to perpetrate criminal acts. In fact, San Antonio officials said that “none of the weapons surrendered at the event were ever used in a crime.”The Anti Anti-2A Social Club is more than a name—it’s a stand against misinformation, double standards, and the relentless attacks on our rights.
