The foolishness of attempting to break into another person’s home cannot be overstated, but these alarming incidents continue to occur. A suspected Texas burglar paid the ultimate price for his mistake.
It was about 6 a.m. Monday morning when a man in Fort Worth heard the unsettling sounds of someone attempting to break into his garage. Naturally, the Lone Star State resident grabbed a firearm and confronted the alleged intruder.
Compliance with instructions would likely have produced a far different outcome
When intercepted by an armed homeowner, it is advisable for a criminal to stop whatever they are doing and comply with instructions. That was apparently not the case on Monday morning.
The intended victim told investigators that, despite his being armed, the suspect approached him “aggressively.” The resident fired in self-defense, and responding officers found the suspect with what was described as “a gunshot wound to the torso.”
The suspected burglar, later identified as 47-year-old Fabian Abernathy, ran from the house but collapsed shortly after on the sidewalk. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead.
Texas sides with law-abiding citizens over violent criminals
The homeowner called 911 and cooperated with the investigation. No arrest has been made, and it is doubtful that one is forthcoming. If the facts reported are confirmed, it was an obvious case of the resident exercising lawful self-defense.
There is no celebration of the loss of life, but that is the risk one accepts when they attempt to break into another person’s home. Law-abiding citizens are not going to just roll over, and the American people own more firearms than ever before.
Couple that with Texas laws defending the right to protect loved ones and property, and a foolish choice brought deadly consequences.
