As is glaringly apparent from the news lately, guns are hardly the only lethal weapons available to violent criminals. Everything from knives to sticks and rocks is regularly wielded against the innocent, and sometimes it takes a firearm to walk away from such an attack.
A rural Texas homeowner on Monday found himself directly in the path of a vehicle that just rammed through his gate. He is fortunate to have had a ready firearm and the skill to use it properly.
Driver allegedly attempted to run down homeowner, who responded with justifiable force
Details are sketchy, but at approximately 6:40 p.m., a call was made to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. The caller identified himself as a homeowner who had just faced down a deadly threat.
The unidentified intended victim told 911 that another man had used his vehicle to force his way through the gate. Deputies learned that the homeowner then shot the intruder who had allegedly aimed at him.
The driver was airlifted to a hospital in Tyler and is reportedly in stable condition. There have been no arrests and no charges filed in the incident, and being that this is the Lone Star State and a rural sector at that, it is doubtful that any will be forthcoming.
Motor vehicles may certainly be deadly weapons in the wrong hands
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers launched an investigation, but Texas law is clear. A motor vehicle can be just as deadly as any weapon, and targets are well within their legal threshold to use lethal force to defend themselves.
A replay of this scenario in a locale such as Chicago or Seattle might have a markedly different outcome, but not so in Texas.
The Second Amendment is on solid footing, and law-abiding citizens know that the law is on their side when they are forced to confront a violent attack.
