Under Pressure: SF Sheriff Apologizes for CCW Renewal Delays

No one howls quite like the public figure caught in obvious wrongdoing, and their protests of innocence often dramatically transform into a long-overdue apology.

That is the case with San Francisco Sheriff Paul Miyamoto. This week, the embattled lawman was forced to admit official failures in processing renewal requests for concealed carry weapons (CCW) permits.

Many law-abiding residents watched helplessly as their permits expired due to gross inaction by Miyamoto’s department. As for the sheriff’s apology, which heavily blamed budget and staffing cuts for its incompetence, it may be too late to avert federal action.

Critics charge SF residents are denied their Second Amendment rights

Dozens of CCW renewal applications currently languish in the sheriff’s office despite being filed on time. According to Miyamoto’s apology, these delays were unintentional and will be addressed.

“We have experienced administrative delays in processing renewals, and I take full responsibility for the Sheriff’s Office’s failure to process and renew CCW permits, which resulted in some unintentionally expiring,” Miyamoto said in his apology statement. “This should not have happened.”

Apology may not be enough to ward off federal lawsuit

San Francisco has been openly defiant of the Second Amendment and the U.S. Supreme Court since 2022’s monumental Bruen decision expanding gun rights. Instead of compliance, the sheriff’s office established some of the most oppressive restrictions in the nation for CCW permits.

That era may be quickly ending.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) issued a scathing warning to San Francisco authorities—AFTER the sheriff’s apology.

A spokeswoman told reporters that the city may face a lawsuit like the one filed against Los Angeles earlier this year over the same issue.

“San Francisco’s failure to adequately staff its agencies while wasting millions of taxpayer dollars…is not an excuse to violate the Constitution,” the DOJ spokeswoman warned. “San Francisco would do well to review the lawsuit we filed against Los Angeles County and revise its policies and practices accordingly to ensure compliance with the law.”
