Vermont Government Promises Veto of Guns in Bars Bill if it Reaches His Desk

While some political leaders like to play both sides of any issue, one this week planted his flag firmly in support of the Second Amendment.

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) announced in no uncertain terms that his veto pen would be locked and loaded if a bill to ban firearms in Burlington bars cleared the legislature. He argued that such a law would place an undue burden on establishments that serve alcohol.

“Like, who’s going to stand at the door and frisk people?” Scott asked. “Are you going to have a metal detector?”

Governor questions the wisdom of piling on yet more gun control

The governor proceeded to blast what would be an onerous enforcement procedure. “I just don’t think it’s effective. I don’t see how you enforce it, and I don’t think that is going to fix what ails Burlington.”

Scott further noted the undue complication of gun laws in Burlington being significantly different from those elsewhere in Vermont.

The controversial bill cleared the state Senate in April, but by only 17 votes. This is significant because it does not come close to a strong enough majority to override the governor’s veto.

Supporters claim bar patrons would be ‘safer’

The proposed change in Burlington’s city charter requires approval by local voters before acceptance from legislators and the governor. Under its provisions, proponents argued that the area’s bar owners could call the Burlington Police if there was an issue with an armed customer.

Backers also claimed such a prohibition makes drinking establishments safer, something gun rights supporters fiercely rebut.

The Vermont Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs strongly opposed more blanket bans on lawful carry. It and other Second Amendment advocates counter that disarming good people does not make anyone safer but instead leaves citizens helpless in the case of a violent attack.
