Violent College Attacks Reignite Calls for Campus Carry

Second Amendment advocates in eight states now call for easing restrictions on campus carry after two university attacks in recent months.

Just last week, a convicted ISIS supporter who served time in prison for terror connections fired into an ROTC training room at Old Dominion University. The instructor was killed and two other injured before students were able to eliminate the threat.

And it was December when an armed gunman killed two students and injured nine others at Brown University. The suspect later murdered an MIT professor before being found dead.

College campuses are far too often considered ‘soft targets’

Many lawmakers believe that permitting students of legal age to carry on campus offers a first line of defense against “soft target” attacks. Violent criminals and terrorists inherently choose to spread mayhem at such places because they do not fear an armed response.

Several lawmakers look to change this. States including Florida, Louisiana, New Hampshire, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming are considering proposals to correct this situation.

Supporters believe an armed campus population has a solid first line of defense

The Sunshine State is considering a new law to expand campus carry to include faculty, staff, and students who are legally permitted to possess a weapon.

Another proposal awaiting Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R) signature would establish campus carry rights for certain faculty and staff.

Louisiana officials are also considering permitting all adults legally qualified to carry a firearm to do so on college campuses.

Of course, there is opposition. Anti-gun lawmakers believe that the presence of more legal firearms will create a Wild West scenario and result in deadly campus incidents. The evidence, however, says otherwise.

Several states allow campus carry within their legal framework, and there are no shootings among legal permit holders to report. The truth is the opposite, that far too many times, law-abiding students and staff are helpless in the event of a violent attack.
