Make no mistake, even though Virginia is politically a battleground state, anti-Second Amendment forces dominate its government.
Led by Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D), who laughably campaigned as a moderate, the state is in the midst of one of the most rapid clampdowns on gun rights in recent memory. However, the state Senate and House of Delegates last week poured cold water on multiple measures the governor sent back to the Legislature that included her recommendations.
New governor claims to respect Second Amendment but acts otherwise
Spanberger wanted to ban all firearm magazines capable of holding more than 15 rounds. However, due to significant pushback from within her own party ranks, that figure was shelved.
Through the maneuverings of both chambers, lawmakers effectively gutted the backdoor attempt to criminalize standard-capacity ammo magazines.
In a curious move, Spanberger tried to remove the exception from a firearm ban at hospitals created for an individual “who has written authorization from the hospital, including authorization related to an employee’s scope of employment.”
Lawmakers went along with most of the governor’s agenda
The governor further recommended that the exception be yanked for “any person brought into a hospital pursuant to the issuance of an emergency custody order or involuntary detention order.” A bipartisan majority disagreed.
After essentially what amounted to a day of nitpicking, the House and Senate agreed to many of the governor’s gun control suggestions. These addressed issues ranging from safe storage to renaming the voluntary “buyback” program as a “sell-back” program.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) notified its membership that the organization “is ready to challenge these unconstitutional bills in court the moment Spanberger signs them and is closely monitoring action on the legislation sent back for her evaluation.”
The bills with modifications that lawmakers rejected head back to Spanberger’s desk, where she may veto them, sign them, or allow them to become law through inaction.
There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.
Defend America is more than a name, it’s a stand for freedom, resilience, and the values this country was built on. Every tee, hat, and mug is a symbol of unapologetic pride. Wear it loud, wear it proud, and let the world know: freedom isn’t negotiable.
