As a wave of Commonwealth Attorneys tells the state to put their “assault weapons” ban where the sun doesn’t shine, the sponsor of the insidious prohibition on the most popular modern sporting rifles does not appreciate Second Amendment defenders standing up to the Virginia government.
State Sen. Saddam Azlan Salim (D) reacted belligerently to the sharp increase in prosecutors rejecting the ban with the standard-issue vitriol expected from that side of the debate.

“I know these Republican prosecutors see this as an opportunity for tough guy posturing and amateur constitutional lawyering, but ending the sale of assault weapons in Virginia isn’t something an individual prosecutor can do anything about,” Salim said.
Perhaps not one, but the total reached at least seven and climbing, and enough brave leaders who place the Constitution above political grandstanding will cause a serious problem for Virginia lawmakers.
Salim added that the job of local prosecutors is to prosecute and that he expects local law enforcement to uphold the statewide ban. But what happens when law enforcement also stiffens and refuses to play along with the gun control scheme?
Now, at least one Virginia sheriff is also standing up to the state
Clarke County Sheriff Travis Sumption announced last week that his office will stand down in enforcing the ban. He, along with Clarke County Commonwealth Attorney Matthew E. Bass, released a statement condemning the legislative overreach.
“For decades, the Supreme Court of the United States has repeatedly affirmed that the United States Constitution guarantees ‘the right of the people to keep and bear arms,” the pair declared. “Likewise, the Constitution of Virginia recognizes the same right…Beyond that, Clarke County is a rural jurisdiction with a longstanding proud tradition of firearm ownership.”
The sheriff went on to assert that these fundamental rights are not something that his office intends to suppress.
