Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz surprised exactly no one on Tuesday when he introduced an expansive new gun control package to the state legislature. And while he claims to be a sportsman who respects gun rights, his actions this week scream the exact opposite.
Walz and his anti-Second Amendment cronies threw everything against the legislative wall to see what would ultimately stick.
Gun rights opponents crammed everything into their legislative wishlist
The governor’s agenda includes a tax on firearms and ammunition, something that would be unthinkable if applied to other constitutional freedoms.
There’s the predictable blanket ban on popular modern sporting rifles and standard capacity ammunition magazines. Walz wants to establish new storage requirements for Minnesota’s law-abiding gun owners and mandate when victims of crime must report stolen weapons.
The storage aspect of the proposal would allow the police to enter private residences and verify whether residents are in compliance. And that’s not all.
Walz incredibly claims he is protecting Second Amendment rights
The embattled governor seeks a mandate for firearm insurance and a sweeping prohibition on 3D-printed weapons manufactured at home by hobbyists. Walz claimed his actions would make the Land of 10,000 Lakes “the safest state around gun violence” while miraculously protecting Second Amendment rights.
In other words, this package is Walz’s idea of protecting gun rights.
The governor and his supporters used last year’s Annunciation School mass shooting to justify disarming and restricting its citizens. No one agrees that the attack was horrific more than gun rights advocates, but they place blame on the obviously deranged attacker.
Where it should be.
Minnesota’s anti-gunners, led by their governor, are attempting to exploit a cruel tragedy to further their political agenda. The public would be better served by leaders focusing on measures for keeping violent criminals locked up and providing mental health services for those obviously in need.
