Campus carry is back in the spotlight in Wisconsin as anti-gun officials once again seek to encroach on Second Amendment rights.
This week, lawmakers introduced a bill that would create a Class A misdemeanor for anyone possessing a firearm on the grounds or in a building on a university or college campus—public or private.
Supporters do not care to carve out an exception for law-abiding adults who possess a valid concealed carry permit. Current law exempts these individuals from the campus firearm ban.
Anti-gun lawmakers argue that banning campus carry altogether will improve public safety
State Sen. Kelda Roys (D) and Rep. Brienne Brown (D) proposed the controversial law. Roys claimed that her move was aimed at improving safety on college campuses—by disarming law-abiding citizens.
“Nobody should be living with the fear of gun violence, but certainly not young people on college campuses across the state,” Roys said as she revealed the proposal. “In terms of our drafting, it’s quite simple: Wisconsin already has gun-free school zones across the state, and this bill simply applies those protections to college campuses.”
Individual choice by each institution would be eradicated
Higher education facilities in Wisconsin currently have the option of whether to allow carry by permit holders. If a college or university does not want to permit firearms on campus, it simply needs to post a sign stating its policy.
But AB 427 eliminates this option. Wisconsin’s status as one of 11 states that permit some carry on campus is in serious jeopardy in this legislative session.
Eighteen states ban campus carry altogether, while the most significant number, 21, leaves the decision up to the individual institution.
The bill introduced this week would create a misdemeanor with punishments up to nine months in jail, a $10,000 fine, or both upon conviction.
