A West Virginia homeowner is fortunate to be alive today after confronting an armed trespasser, and it is thanks to the Second Amendment that he walked away.
Authorities were called to a Kanawha residence just after midnight Friday after a report came in of a violent showdown. Investigators believe the homeowner was checking on a home that is not his primary residence when he found the suspect at the door.
Homeowner discovered an alleged intruder in the residence after midnight
Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Joshua Lester described the terrifying confrontation. “That individual came to the door and met the homeowner at the doorway, and the individual had several weapons on him. A fight ensued between the two, and the homeowner pulled a firearm and fatally shot the intruder that was in his home.”
Imagine being the man who discovered that he was not alone. Now consider how terrifying that situation would have been without a loaded firearm ready.
The man who defended his life and property does not face charges
Lester detailed the process of determining whether to press charges.
“We’ll have to kind of retrace all the steps. They’ll have to find where the firearm was fired,” he said. “They’ll have to find all of the discharge from that and any evidence that pertains to that, the weapons involved. They’ll look at that. They’ll look at the placements of where that evidence fell versus injuries to the victim as well as the suspect.”
Officials quickly determined that the courageous homeowner would not face charges for defending himself and his property with lethal force.
A neighbor, identified as Mindy Nichols, described the shooting as unusual. “It is very scary. You’re out here in the country. People are kind, and then this happens. I don’t know. It just kind of startles you.”
Trouble is always ready, so it’s essential that good citizens are also vigilant and practice situational awareness. In this West Virginia incident and countless others, that readiness can be lifesaving.
